First DMA Recital

March 27, 2025

New York City, NY

Jiahao Han gave his first Doctor of Musical Arts recital at The Juilliard School under the tutelage of Mr. Hung-Kuan Chen and Dr. Yoheved Kaplinsky.

The first half of the program traced an intimate tonal relationship among three distinctive works: Shostakovich’s nostalgic Prelude and Fugue in C major, Op. 87, No. 1; Rameau’s exquisite Gavotte et six doubles in A minor; and Prokofiev’s rarely performed Piano Sonata No. 9 in C major, a luminous pearl of the piano literature. Together, these pieces revealed Jiahao’s sensitivity to tonal color, historical style, and subtle musical architecture across vastly different repertories.

The second half turned to two seminal Romantic works: Brahms’s deeply inward Six Piano Pieces, Op. 118, with its atmosphere of longing and unrequited feeling, and Chopin’s brilliant Variations on Mozart’s “Là ci darem la mano,” Op. 2. As an encore, Jiahao invited two friends—soprano Luna Seongeun Park and bass Son Jin Kim—to perform Mozart’s original duettino “Là ci darem la mano,” creating a charming and meaningful echo of Chopin’s virtuosic transformation. The recital presented Jiahao not only as a pianist of refinement and imagination, but also as a thoughtful programmer attentive to musical relationships across history.

Here is the performance of Chopin's Variations on "Là ci darem la mano" and Mozart's original duettino "Là ci darem la mano."
